Back 2 Basics - Kitchen Sanitizing

It's Tuesday, and time to chat about the basics
we've seemed to ignore as life has progressed.
Let's challenge ourselves to incorporate
 some of the basics
back into our daily living.

Today's basic is all about...
Kitchen Sanitizing

One of our goals this summer is to teach the boys how to prepare an evening meal from start to finish. Along with the planning and shopping, they will each prepare dinner one night a week. I'm pleasantly surprised at their eagerness.
Son#2 gave it a try first. He made Mini-Meatloaves, Green Beans, and Macaroni Salad...and it was all delicious! Though I want my boys to enjoy cooking, I feel it's equally, if not more important, for them to learn to be CLEAN in the kitchen.

We've set some basic rules for them to follow...Wash your hands before preparing food, use a board for cutting meats, keep raw meats separated from the veggies, etc. We also want them to learn how to properly sanitize the kitchen to prevent illness and contamination of foods. So, here are the basics...

Cleaned BEFORE Sanitized
For sanitizing to be effective, you must CLEAN a surface before you SANITIZE it. It's a "cart before the horse" kind of thing. ☺You want to remove any of the dirty microbes and crumbs first.

Hot, Soapy Water
Wash all hard surfaces with hot, soapy water ensuring no food particles remain. Rinse with plain, clean water.

Elbow Grease
Work those muscles and scrub! Slopping the cloth across the counter surface just doesn't cut it.

Sanitize Your Cutting Boards
Add one teaspoon of bleach to one quart of water, then immerse boards into the solution. Let it sit for a few minutes. Remove and air dry. NO RINSING. The same sanitizing solution can be applied to your kitchen counters. Spray-mist the solution onto your countertops, let air dry.
