February seems like a good month to be frugal, right? Well, at least Shay from Quilting in my Pyjamas (QIMP) agrees. She has declared to use the contents of her freezer and slash her food budget in half. Now, if I had 3 freezers chocked full of all the glaciated goodness I've seen at QIMP, I'd have as lofty a goal.
Remember when I shared my grocery excursions? My budget is small ($450-$500 for 5 people), and I admitted I haven't been using coupons. I used to clip, clip, clip every week. Then my life became a little more complicated, and clipping seemed tedious, tiresome, and time-consuming. My plan for Frugal Grocery February is to go back to clipping coupons and stockpiling non-perishables, namely items such as Shampoos, Toothpaste, and Toothbrushes. With 3 kids who have heads full of hair and mouths full of teeth, these are budget-busters. My goal is to build up at least a six month supply while spending less than on these types of items by using coupons. I'm planning to shave off at least $100 from our grocery budget...maybe more!
Yesterday's paper was full of coupons...4 flyers. I purchased one, then decided I needed more because there were so many coupons for shampoo and toothpaste. After visiting two stores to find a newspaper (I really should've thought about buying one earlier than 7pm), I finally found 2 newspapers. Here's a bonus tip for all you new couponers: Check the paper for coupon inserts before buying. I only purchased one, because the other had been pilfered, and someone had pinched the coupons!
I brought that paper home, put LittleGirl to bed, and began clipping. It wasn't so bad...it only took me 1 and a half hours! Right now, I have a pile of little paper bits and a teeny-tiny book with which to organize them. I think I need a better system. I plan to peruse TipNut today. Apparently, there are scores of ways to organize you savings stash.
I'll also be scouring the grocery webpages for sales today. Here's my biggest concern: Am I Saving or Am I Spending? Come back next Monday to see how I made out!
Do you use coupons?
What tips can you share to make this transition easier for Newbies (or lazy old ones, like me!)?
Happy Monday! :o)
