Favourite Things Friday

My Favourite Thing for this Friday isn't something completely tangible, not in the traditional sense of the word. During this past month, I've spent several hours going through all the nooks and crannies of our house, culling for items to be given to charity or sold in the Big3DayYardSale (B3DYS)...at least that's what I'm calling it.

After seeing an episode of Hoarders, I tossed a look around our house. Truly, it's not bad enough for a visit from the producers of that fascinating show; however, we had a lot of useless items taking up space. Immediately, we (you realize when I say 'we,' I mean 'me', right?) began opening neglected cabinets, cubbies, and closets. Cabinets, cubbies, and closets, oh my! Cabinets, cubbies, and closets, oh my! Oops, I've digressed. Must be that Wizard of Oz VHS tape I found. ;o)

Out came the un-used, mis-used, non-used stuff and junk cluttering up our house. There it sat, piled up in the den for a couple of weeks. Yeah, really! Two weeks! We took a long look at it, weeded through it, and divided it into Charity / Sale / Doesn't Belong to Us, Why are We Storing It? categories. We (I still mean the 'me' of 'we') priced it, sorted it into like items, and placed an ad on Craigslist. Okay. Serious digression here...I will NEVER place an ad in our local newspaper again! Know why? They upped the price to $35 for posting a Tag Sale advertisement in the Classifieds. What Flapdoodle!

The B3DYS began yesterday. We (I mean the kids and me) pulled everything out and placed it on tables, and piled in bins. We (back to the 'me' of the 'we') arranged it all, using our marketing/merchandising strategies gleaned from years of Thrifting and Regular Store Shopping. We popped the signs in the yard, and put in our address to our Craigslist ad. (Sorry to digress again. Here's a tip about Craigslist. If you're having a sale, start advertising a few days in advance, but don't post the address until about an hour before you open. Otherwise you'll have Creepies hanging out at your house!) Even with the hour to spare, we had twenty people waiting to pick over our stuff.  I'm not sure if I should've been excited or scared.

In less than 20 minutes, I had visibly reduced a ton of items, and had $100 to go into the Dexter's Invisible Fence Fund. We had lulls in the shopping throughout the day; however, we had stops and sales right up until closing time. We'll start again at 7am this morning. Where am I going with all of this? Oh, right. If you're still with me, it's my Favourite Thing...the feeling of accomplishment. Accomplishing our/my goal of cleaning out the clutter. That's my Favourite Thing for Friday. Now, if I haven't bored you to death, or even if I have; hop over to Shay's Quilting in my Pyjamas, and see all the other Favourites for this Friday.

PS...I let so much fabric go from my stash, and patterns, thread, and notions. I feel as though I can create again. I'm pulling out more patterns today. I think it's kind of cathartic. Once you start letting go, it gets a little easier with each and every item. I know...it's Insanity! LOL
